Internet trying to find a straight
answer on how much to feed your kitten
until now I'm Dr Lindsey butzer a small
animal veterinarian and I'm going to
show you guys exactly how much you need
to feed your sweet new little kitten and
I'm gonna explain it to you in a super
easy way

so since I'm a veterinarian I want to
show you guys this body condition score
card that we use as veterinarians that
rate through animals from a one to a
nine one being emaciated or too thin and
that's when you can palpate your animals
ribs easily you could feel their spine
and for fluffy cats like this you should
be able to feel their pelvis if they're
too thin so for a nine that cat's gonna
be really obese and overweight they're
gonna have a huge belly and you're gonna
be able to easily palpate a ton of fat
over their ribs so knowing this you'll
be able to palpate your own cat and
it'll let you know if you're feeding
them too much or too little all right
guys so let's get into this Chef part of
the video and let's make some kitten
food before we get started you always
always have to feed your kittens and
cats a cat formulated diet first off
cats need more protein than dogs do and
they also need taurine in their diets
because they can't make it themselves so
make sure you have a cat food that
you're feeding your kittens so kittens
should go home around eight weeks old
they may go home a little bit early so I
always recommend offering them a buffet
of food which consists of some wet food
and some dry kibble because around three
to four weeks old they're being weaned
from their moms and they might not know
how to eat food yet so you want to feed
them a wet food that's easy for them to
eat and then as they get a little bit
older they can transition to eating only
dry food so let's start with an eight
week old kitten that's about one to two
pounds this is a big can of cat food and
here is your smaller cans of cat food
You're Gonna feed them 1 4 can of a big
can of cat food or one half can of a
small can of wet cat food and then
you're gonna offer them 1 4 cup of a dry
kibble you're gonna feed your kittens
three times a day and don't be worried
if they don't eat all of their food
kittens love wasting food just pick it
up throw it away and give them some
fresh food and also don't be worried if
your new kitten doesn't eat for the
first day you do want to be worried if
they don't eat for more than two days
definitely bring them to the
veterinarian and make sure everything is
okay because cats have to eat unlike our
dogs so now let's pretend we're gonna
feed that older kitten who's around four
to six months old so you give them that
1 4 cup of dry and then you could give
them a whole can of the wet food so you
just give them that whole can and you
give that to them twice a day if that's
how your schedule works and you can feed
them a snack in the middle of the day if
you want to all right so I have another
kitty actor Gemma here or should I say
actress and we're gonna feed the adult
cat so so I explained how to feed the
kitten but I'm just going to give you a
visual of what it looks like to feed
your adult cat fast forward to our adult
cat who's around one to two years old
I'm going to show you how much that
looks like feeding them one half cup of
kibble like this
and then one full can
of wet food is what you can offer them
and you can offer this to them twice a
day so this does look like a lot of food
so always refer to that body condition
score card that I talked about in the
beginning to make sure your cat isn't
getting too obese if they are getting
fat you can cut back the food 1 4 cup of
dry and 1 4 cup of wet and offer them
that every day and see how their weight
does but we don't want them getting too
obese and I don't know how active your
cats are if they're outdoor or indoor
cats and how much energy they're getting
but start with this amount of food and
then go from there and for the larger
cans you can split this can in half and
give them a half a can of wet food put
some tin foil on this and put it in the
fridge for dinner
